Benefits of Veterinary Surgery

Surgical intervention may be recommended for a number of reasons. It can be anything from an urgent life-saving surgery for an injury or illness, for a diagnostic reason, or a routine elective procedure on an otherwise healthy patient.

Emergency procedures are scary for everyone, but absolutely vital. In the case your pet needs an emergency procedure, we will discuss the options available on a case by case basis. We are equipped to handle many emergencies, but not all of them. Always call before arriving for an emergency, so we can be sure we’re prepared for your arrival or recommend another hospital if we aren’t able to provide the optimal care for your pet’s problem.

Why might my pet need surgery?

Surgical intervention may be recommended for a number of reasons. It can be anything from an urgent life-saving surgery for an injury or illness, for a diagnostic reason, or a routine elective procedure on an otherwise healthy patient.

Emergencies

Emergency procedures are scary for everyone, but absolutely vital. In the case your pet needs an emergency procedure, we will discuss the options available on a case by case basis. We are equipped to handle many emergencies, but not all of them. Always call before arriving for an emergency, so we can be sure we’re prepared for your arrival or recommend another hospital if we aren’t able to provide the optimal care for your pet’s problem.

At Animal House Veterinary Hospital we highly recommend you look into pet insurance, for any care but especially emergency, as these procedures are often financially straining and necessary immediately. Ask us for information on pet insurance options.

Diagnostic

Sometimes surgery is used as a diagnostic tool. Some examples of this include sampling or removing masses or tissues and submitting them for biopsy to gain more in-depth information about a condition.

Elective

Routine elective surgeries such as a spay or neuter are usually planned in advance. These procedures are not life-saving in a short term sense, but are often recommended to ensure a better quality of life long term.

What is the process?

With every anesthetized procedure , we will perform a full physical examination and diagnostics prior to sedating. This will always include bloodwork, and may also include x-rays or an ultrasound. The extent of diagnostics recommended depends on the individual patient and situation. We will always communicate with you throughout every step of the process. After diagnostics are performed, we will have a conversation about the surgical process, recovery, additional treatment, and what to expect afterwards.

During the procedure your pet will be monitored by one of our surgical technicians. They will monitor your pet’s heart rate, pulse quality, respiratory rate, temperature, pulse oximetry, and blood pressure. Pain medication will be given, and your pet will recover wrapped in warm blankets, on heat support if needed, closely watched by our technicians. They will go home with you when they’re fully recovered and their doctor deems it safe. Before leaving, we will have a conversation about any medications or treatments needed at home and make sure you feel confident about caring for them after their surgery.
